Summer SEARCH

Maine SEARCH (Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health) is looking for 1st year (pre-clinical) medical, dental, FNP, and PA students for summer 2012 (June 18 - July 20) community-based primary care training placements.

Pre-Clinical students complete a project identified by the site and its staff which will be responsive to a current community need.  Students in turn will gain first-hand exposure to aspects of Maine culture and the special needs of underserved communities.

  • Students will spend 50% of their time completing a Community Needed Project.
  • Students will provide a report at the end of the rotation along with any pertinent project materials to reflect the scope, goals and outcomes.
  • Students will spend 50% of their time shadowing their preceptor.
  • Students are encouraged to work with providers from other disciplines.
  • Student stipend provided at a rate of $150.00 per week to help offset travel costs and other expenses.
  • Student housing is arranged and expense is covered by SEARCH.
  • Students gather for an initial Orientation Weekend June 24th-25th.  Location TBD
  • Students get back together for a Project Summit on July 20th

Housing and Stipends

SEARCH arranges low-cost housing within a reasonable driving distance from sites, often in the home of a community member. A stipend is provided for students to defray the cost of housing, travel and living expenses. Funds may be available to assist NHSC Scholars with travel to Maine.

Due to the realities of rural living, participants must have an automobile. There is no public transportation, and the great distances required for hospital rounds, home visits, and other project activities require independent transportation.
